Beginning life

Cattrall is one of the four children of Dennis (a construction engineer) and Shane (a secretary). The gamily immigrated to Courtenay, British Columbia, Canada when she was not even a year old. But she returned to Cheshire at the age of 11 due to her grandmother’s illness. Here she studied at the
Canadian city of At 11 she returned to Cheshire when her grandmother became ill, and she studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). Then at 16, she went back to Canada to finish school.

Career & Works

Cattrall’s acting career began, when she graduated from high school in 1972 and shifted to New York City, where she graduated from American Academy of Dramatic Arts and signed a five- year movie deal with ace director Otto Preminger, but the contract was later bought up by Universal Studios, a year after film debut in Rosebud which came in 1975. She is also one of the last people to be a part of the Universal Contract Player System.

She co-authored a book in 2002 along with her third husband, Mark Levinson named Satisfaction: The Art of the Female Orgasm. She appeared in My Boy Jack, the story of author Rudyard Kipling's search for his son lost in World War I, along with Carey Mulligan, Daniel Radcliffe and David Haig on ITV.

She is reported to be producing and acting for a new HBO show named Sensitive Skin, which is based on a relating British series about a mother and middle aged wife, who re searches for her sexuality.

Cattrall also has appeared in many advertising campaigns, like Pepsi One, Tetley Tea, Nissan cars etc. She also has read poetry of Rupert Brooke on the CD Red Rose Music SACD Sampler Volume One.

Sex and the City

In 1997, Cattrell joined the cast of Darren Star’s Sex and the City to portray the character of Samantha Jones. This role gave her international fame and acclaim. The show ended in 2004 with a viewer ship of a whooping, 10.6 million viewers. She repeated the role of Samantha in the Sex and the City film as well, which was released in 2008.

Samantha is the most sexually sure and oldest of the group of four friends. She is quite loyal to all her friends. She has an established career in public relations, and she is quite strong, firm, confident but outspoken. She likes to try everything sexual at least once. She has lots of lovers and demands that her partners in sex should exit "an hour after I climax." But as the show progresses, Samantha is shown as someone with a tender and sensitive inner self, as she hides it with her strong approach to life. She is also diagnosed with cancer, which changes her viewpoint about life and her relationship with Smith Jerrod.

Personal life

In the past Cattrall has been linked with actor Daniel Benzali, former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, Houston Rockets stars Cuttino Mobley and Steve Francis, French public intellectual Bernard-Henri Lévy, musician Gerald Casale of the New Wave group Devo, and her Whose Life is it Anyway? Co-star Alexander Siddig. But she has been married thrice.

Her marriage to Larry Davis, from whom he had learned speaking fluent German, lasted from 1977 till 1979. She married again 1982 to Andre J. Lyson and this marriage continued till 1989. She married audio designer, Mark Levinson, from 1998 to 2004.
She resides in East Hampton, New York.

Awards & Honors

In 1982, Cattrall was nominated for the Genie Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role, for her work in Ticket to Heaven. In 1991, came the nomination for Worst Supporting Actress during the Golden Raspberry Awards for her work in The Bonfire of the Vanities. In 1993, she was nominated at The Saturn Awards for Best Supporting Actress for her work in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

She also won the Lucy award, at the event Women in Film Lucy Awards in 1999. She won the Golden Globe Award in 2003 for her work in Sex and the City, under the category Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for TV, although she has been nominated for the same series and category four times: 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2004.

For Sex and the City, she has been nominated for the Emmy Awards five times, consecutively, for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2002 and 2004.

At the Screen Actors Guild Awards, She along with the rest of the star cast of Sex and the City was nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005, winning this award in 2001 and 2004. For her individual performance in Sex and the City, she was nominated under the category Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series in 2001, 2002 and 2003.

At the Satellite Awards, 2004, she was nominated for her work in Sex and the City under the category Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Comedy or Musical. She was also nominated for the Gemini Award, 2006 for the Best Host or Interviewer in a General/Human Interest or Talk Program or Series for her work in Sexual Intelligence.
She also won the NBC Universal Award of Distinction at the 2008 Banff World Television Festival.
